THE FILM

We all want somewhere to belong.

A community can give us friendship, purpose, identity and a sense that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

But what happens when belonging comes at a price?

When questioning becomes dangerous?

When loyalty becomes more important than truth?

When the community’s shadow becomes your own?

UNMASKED is a feature documentary exploring what happens inside spiritual communities when devotion, identity, power and belonging become entangled.

But this isn’t simply a film about one organisation.

It is about something much bigger:

Why do intelligent, caring people stay in places that hurt them?

And perhaps an even deeper question:

How do we learn to belong without losing ourselves?

⸻

THIS IS NOT AN EXPOSÉ.

Nor is it a defence.

UNMASKED seeks to enter the grey areas.

To listen to people who stayed.

To listen to people who left.

To hear those who experienced something beautiful.

And those who experienced something painful.

Rather than asking the audience what to think, the film asks them to look more closely.

Because sometimes the hardest thing to see isn’t the organisation.

It’s ourselves.

⸻

A PERSONAL JOURNEY

The filmmaker is not an outside observer.

For years, Jag Kaley was deeply involved in the world at the centre of the film.

Teacher. Practitioner. Community member. Believer.

And eventually, someone who began asking uncomfortable questions.

The journey out was not simply a rejection of a community.

It became an encounter with grief, anger, shame, loyalty, identity and the parts of himself that had been hidden beneath the role he had played.

That personal journey becomes the doorway into a much larger investigation.

⸻

THE QUESTION ?

THE QUESTION?

WHY DO WE STAY?

Imagine discovering that the place you trusted to help you become your best self may also have harmed you.

What do you do?

Walk away?

Fight?

Stay and try to change it?

Blame yourself?

Blame the organisation?

Or perhaps something more complicated happens.

You begin to realise that the community isn’t entirely good.

And it isn’t entirely bad.

It’s human.

And that is where the real investigation begins.

BELONGING

SOVEREIGNTY

THE SHADOW

BELONGING

Humans need belonging.

We create families, religions, movements, communities and cultures because we are not designed to live entirely alone.

Belonging can heal us.

But belonging can also become an unconscious contract:

I belong here — therefore I must protect this place.

And eventually:

If I question this place, perhaps I am the problem.

THE SHADOW

SOVEREIGNTY

THE SHADOW

THE SHADOW

One of the central ideas behind UNMASKED is psychological shadow.

We often project the qualities we cannot accept in ourselves onto other people.

The outsider becomes the problem.

The dissenter becomes disloyal.

The critic becomes negative.

The person who leaves becomes the enemy.

But what happens when a community collectively does the same thing?

And what happens when an individual begins to recognise their own shadow within the conflict?

SOVEREIGNTY

SOVEREIGNTY

SOVEREIGNTY

SOVEREIGNTY

The film ultimately moves towards another possibility.

Not blind loyalty.

Not cynical rejection.

Not replacing one belief system with another.

But sovereignty.

The capacity to think.

To question.

To discern.

To remain connected without surrendering yourself.

To say:

I can love something and still question it.

I can value what I received without denying what harmed me.

I can leave without needing to hate.

THE APPROACH

THE APPROACH

NO VILLAINS. NO SAINTS. NO SIMPLE ANSWERS.

UNMASKED is deliberately not designed as a conventional exposé.

We don’t want to tell the audience who to believe.

We want to create enough space for the audience to think.

The filmmaking combines:

PERSONAL TESTIMONY

People telling their own stories in their own words.

ARCHIVE

Historical material, photographs, recordings and imagery that allow the past to speak for itself.

PSYCHOLOGY

Exploring trauma, attachment, projection, group dynamics, identity and belonging.

SPIRITUALITY

Taking seriously the experiences that draw people towards spiritual communities in the first place.

VISUAL STORYTELLING

Using cinematic imagery, animation and creative sequences to explore internal psychological realities that conventional interviews cannot easily show.

The visual language moves between the intimate and the expansive:

A face.

A memory.

An empty room.

A community gathering.

Archive.

Nature.

Movement.

Silence.

And the internal landscape of a person trying to understand what happened to them.

⸻

 WHY THIS FILM?

WHY NOW?

Across the world, people are searching for meaning.

They are turning towards spirituality, wellness, religion, alternative communities and movements that promise transformation.

At the same time, public conversations about cults, coercive control, spiritual abuse and institutional power have become increasingly visible.

But the conversation often becomes polarised.

Victim or perpetrator.

Believer or critic.

Good community or bad community.

Real human experience is rarely that simple.

UNMASKED wants to occupy the space between those extremes.

Because understanding how communities can harm people may also help us understand how communities can heal people.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I didn’t set out to make a film about spiritual organisations.

I set out to understand myself.

For many years, I found meaning, friendship, purpose and spiritual direction within a community that became a major part of my identity.

It gave me things I genuinely value.

It also left me with questions I could no longer ignore.

Eventually those questions became physical.

Stress.

Exhaustion.

A sense that something inside me was saying:

Pay attention.

For a long time I thought the answer was to work harder on myself.

To become more spiritual.

More disciplined.

More forgiving.

But eventually I began asking a different question:

What if the part of me that was struggling wasn’t failing?

What if it was trying to tell me something?

Leaving or stepping away from a community is not simply a geographical act.

You don’t just leave a building.

You can leave behind friendships.

Language.

Rituals.

Beliefs.

Status.

Purpose.

A version of yourself.

And sometimes, you discover that you don’t know who you are without them.

That is where UNMASKED begins.

I want to make a film that allows complexity.

A film where people don’t have to choose between saying “this saved me” and “this harmed me.”

Sometimes both can be true.

I don’t want to make a film that tells people what to think.

I want to make a film that helps people see.

To see the organisation.

To see the individual.

To see the shadow.

And ultimately, to see themselves.
